As the high school swimming season heads toward its final stretch, athletes across Southern Utah are sharpening their performances in preparation for region and state championships. The upcoming Region 9 meet at Utah Tech University will be a key test, especially after the recent Red Rock Invitational, where larger programs dominated but local teams still made a strong impression. Canyon View’s boys placed third, while Desert Hills’ girls led the local pack with a third-place finish. With several returning standouts, including Canyon View’s Ty Lauer, Sean Cannon, and Soleil Grimshaw, the region remains highly competitive. Cannon, in particular, has emerged as one of the state’s fastest swimmers, posting a leading time in the 200 freestyle.

Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School climbed back to the top of the Dinagyang Festival, winning the Grand Championship in a fiercely contested edition that drew massive crowds and raised the bar for performance quality. Their routine, inspired by the elusive maral leopard cat, stood out for its sharp choreography, cohesive storytelling, and strong musical execution. Judges praised the tribe’s precision and overall impact, sealing their return to the top after previous wins in 2016 and 2017. The victory earned Salognon a P1.5 million cash prize, along with an additional P10 million worth of school development projects, bringing their total incentive to P11.5 million. Meanwhile, Tribu Paghidaet finished as first runner-up, followed by Tribu Pan-ay and Tribu Taga-Baryo, with all groups receiving substantial prizes and project support as part of the city’s effort to connect cultural events with education.

Riverview proved once again that timing matters, pulling away late to claim its third consecutive Downriver Classic boys swimming and diving championship. In a tightly contested meet at Southgate Anderson, the Pirates edged rival Trenton, 302-266, continuing a dominant run dating back to 2024. The two teams traded the lead multiple times early on, but Riverview seized control during the 200-yard freestyle relay and never looked back. Strong finishes in the closing events helped the Pirates widen the gap and seal the victory, reinforcing their status as the team to beat in the competition.
