The 5A state swimming meet at BYU was nothing short of historic, with 12 state records falling across 22 events. Seven overall individual state records, three overall relay state records, and two 5A-specific records were set in a meet that longtime coaches called unprecedented. Olympus Abe Astle dominated with four state records, while Highland’s Veronica Black and Brighton’s Luan Barnard also made history with their record-breaking performances.
The 5A region swimming championships delivered standout performances as teams competed ahead of the state tournament at BYU on Feb. 14-15. Cyprus, Box Elder, Skyline, and Wasatch claimed the girls’ region titles, while Kearns, Box Elder, Olympus, and Wasatch secured the boys’ championships. However, the highlight of the weekend was Highland senior Veronica Black setting a new state record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.06, breaking the previous record by over a second.
After months of preparation, the Olympus High School girls' soccer team outlasted Brighton in a dramatic penalty shootout to win the 5A state championship. Goalkeeper Joss Baker delivered two clutch saves, while the Titans converted all four of their penalties to secure a 4-2 PK victory after 100 scoreless minutes. The triumph marks Olympus’s first state title since 2020, denying Brighton its first crown in a decade.
