The 5A region swimming championships delivered standout performances as teams competed ahead of the state tournament at BYU on Feb. 14-15. Cyprus, Box Elder, Skyline, and Wasatch claimed the girls’ region titles, while Kearns, Box Elder, Olympus, and Wasatch secured the boys’ championships. However, the highlight of the weekend was Highland senior Veronica Black setting a new state record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.06, breaking the previous record by over a second.
Other top performances included Wasatch’s girls' 200 medley relay team setting a new state record at 1:55.96 and Skyline’s Jade Garstang dominating the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. On the boys’ side, Olympus swimmers excelled, with Benjamin Hatchard and Abraham Astle posting multiple 5A-best times of the season. As the teams head into the state tournament, these athletes are poised for more record-breaking performances.
