The 5A state swimming meet at BYU was nothing short of historic, with 12 state records falling across 22 events. Seven overall individual state records, three overall relay state records, and two 5A-specific records were set in a meet that longtime coaches called unprecedented. Olympus Abe Astle dominated with four state records, while Highland’s Veronica Black and Brighton’s Luan Barnard also made history with their record-breaking performances.
While Olympus cruised to the boys’ team title by nearly 200 points, the girls' championship came down to the final race. Holding a narrow six-point lead, Skyline’s 400 freestyle relay team secured a thrilling wire-to-wire victory, with Jade Garstang sealing the win in the final leg. Garstang, who also claimed two individual titles in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, described the meet as “really stressful” but ultimately rewarding in her senior season.
