Rising Stars Shine at MTN CHAMPS Ibadan as School Teams Take Top Honors

The energy was electric in Ibadan as over 150 schools competed in the second leg of Season 2 of the MTN CHAMPS, one of Nigeria’s most exciting youth athletics events. Held simultaneously at the University of Ibadan Sports Complex and Lekan Salami Stadium from April 5–8, the competition showcased emerging talent and fierce team rivalries.

Anglican Comprehensive High School stole the spotlight in the Cadet Girls (U14) division, racking up 58 points. Their success was driven by Goodnews Saturday, who dazzled the crowd with back-to-back wins in the 100m and 200m sprints. Teammates Eniola Fasasi and Abigael Ogunbowale delivered a one-two finish in the 400m and later teamed up with others to take gold in the 4x100m relay.

Trailing behind were Queen of Apostles with 23 points and Oluyoro Girls with 20, rounding out the podium.

In the Cadet Boys category, United Secondary School Agugu emerged victorious, but just barely. They tied at 26 points with Anwar-Ul-Islam, but won the title based on the number of contributing team members, highlighting the depth and consistency of their squad.

Queen of Apostles redeemed themselves in the Youth Girls division, climbing from second in the Cadet ranks to first with 51 points. Their strong team presence earned them multiple top-three finishes. Luba Comprehensive from Ijebu Ode took second with 36 points, thanks in part to Jimoh Toheebat, who earned MVP honors with a 100m win, and Dorcas Ogundipe, who medaled in both long jump and sprint events. Oluyoro Girls followed closely behind in third with 33 points.

On the boys’ side, International School Lagos (ISL) brought the heat, capturing three gold medals and topping the Youth Boys team standings with 40 points. Their closest rivals were Best Legacy School from Oyo with 28 points, energized by athlete Kehinde Ifeoluwa Ojo, and Bodija International, who landed in third with 27 points.

Meanwhile, the No Sweat team from Lagos proved why they’re a force in the Junior (Mixed) category. After winning the same title in Season 1, they returned to claim it again, scoring an impressive 73 points. Key contributors included Oluwademilade Ajayi and Eniola Shiro, who competed across sprint and field events including the 200m, 400m, and shot put. TI Oyesina Model and the University of Ibadan followed in second and third with 68 and 64 points, respectively.

The MTN CHAMPS journey continues, with the next stop set for Jos, promising even more action and incredible performances from Nigeria’s next generation of athletes.
