High School Boys' Swimming Sees Participation Growth in 2023–2024

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has released its annual participation survey for the 2023–2024 school year, revealing a significant increase in boys' swimming participation. This year, 138 more boys joined high school swimming, bringing the total to 123,208 athletes across the U.S. In contrast, girls' swimming saw a slight decline with 202 fewer participants than the previous year, though the sport remains strong with 157,128 female athletes. Combined, these figures highlight that over 280,000 high school swimmers are involved in the U.S., affirming swimming's strong presence in school sports.

California, Florida, and Texas continue to lead in participation due to larger school systems and better access to pools, particularly in year-round climates. The growth in boys' swimming can be attributed to factors such as more schools offering the sport, improved facilities, and increased visibility. NFHS officials are optimistic about the trend, focusing on expanding opportunities, especially in smaller school districts with limited resources. While the slight drop in girls' participation is a point of concern, swimming remains one of the most popular and inclusive high school sports, and continued support at both school and regional levels is crucial for future growth.
