Greenwich High School Opens Rugby Season with Convincing Win Over Staples

Greenwich High School’s 2024 boys’ rugby season began with an impressive 34–5 victory over rival Staples High School on 30 March. The match, held at Greenwich's GHS turf field, was the Varsity A team's season opener, and the Cardinals quickly took control, leading 29–0 by halftime. Despite a late try from Staples, Greenwich held firm, adding another score in the second half to secure the win. Joey Matus was named Player of the Match for his standout performance in both attack and defence.

Head coach Joe Kelly praised his team's preparation and depth, which played a key role in the dominant victory. The match also saw the debut of several younger players stepping up from the junior varsity squad, adding promising depth to Greenwich’s lineup. With this win, the team has set a strong foundation for the season ahead, where they will face a challenging mix of regional and national-level teams. Known for its strong rugby tradition, Greenwich is poised to contend for top honours in the 2024 high school rugby season, as the win energizes both supporters and school officials for another competitive campaign.
