Day two of the Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Athletics Championships saw Queensland’s Gout Gout make history, smashing Peter Norman’s 56-year-old 200m record with a stunning 20.04-second sprint. The 17-year-old’s performance not only surpassed Norman’s iconic 20.06 from the 1968 Olympics but also placed him second on the all-time global list for under 18 athletes, ahead of Usain Bolt. Amaya Mearns (QLD) also shined, claiming the Under 17 Girls’ 200m title in 23.15, becoming the second-fastest Australian Under 18 athlete ever.
Other highlights included Mason McGroder (NSW) dominating the Under 17 Boys’ Long Jump with a 7.86m leap, Ken Ferrante Tanikawa (SA) setting a new U16 100m Hurdles national record in 12.59, and Khushnoor Rangi (VIC) equaling the Under 18 Girls’ Pole Vault championship record at 4.05m. Telaya Blacksmith (NSW) impressed in the U20 Para 200m with a season-best 25.67, while Jonathan Neethling (VIC) set a new 2000m Steeplechase championship record. With more events ahead, the competition continues to showcase Australia’s next generation of track and field stars.
