Last weekend, Trinity students made history by competing in the National U18 Schools Padel Championships in Bristol — the school’s first-ever official padel tournament appearance. With 132 student athletes from across the country taking part, the event marked the largest junior padel competition in the UK to date.
Representing Trinity were Fifth Year students Robbie T and Anish M, alongside Upper Sixth students Karson C and Jamie W. Over the course of the tournament, the team showcased impressive progress and teamwork, finishing third in a highly competitive group that included Epsom College, Manchester Grammar School, Colfe’s School, and King Edward’s Witley. Though they narrowly missed out on a place in the playoffs, the team proved their potential at a national level.
Mr Hooper, Trinity’s coach, commented on the significance of the event:
“This was another great opportunity to diversify our sporting programme and give students access to emerging sports that are gaining huge popularity, Padel is currently recognised as the fastest-growing sport in the world, and with new courts opening in Croydon, we hope this is just the beginning for Trinity students.”
Robbie T, a Fifth Year student with previous experience competing in national-level tennis, reflected on the tournament:
“I had only played padel a few times before this and never with school, it’s different to tennis because of the walls, meaning that even if the ball goes past you, you can still get it back. It was a great experience because there were schools from all over the country and a really good atmosphere. I’d like to play padel more after this tournament.”
Following this successful debut, Trinity is set to compete in the U13 and U15 National Schools Padel Championships later this year.
