Tonbridge School hosted the England Hockey Schools Championships Tier 2 Boys’ U14 Kent Cup, welcoming 12 teams from across the county for a full day of competitive school hockey.

With many of the players only beginning their hockey journey at the start of the Lent Term, Tonbridge entered two teams to maximise opportunities for match experience and development.

The U14B side made an excellent start to the tournament, recording strong victories against Dulwich Cranbrook, St Edmund’s and The Harvey Grammar School. A draw with Cranbrook and a narrow defeat to Sutton Valence saw the team finish a highly respectable third place in a competitive group of six.

Tonbridge’s U14A team also delivered an impressive series of performances during the group stages. Wins against Duke of York’s Royal Military School, Norton Knatchbull and Ashford School secured second place in their group, with their only defeat coming against Simon Langton Grammar School.

In the semi-final, Tonbridge faced Sutton Valence in a tightly contested match that finished 0–0. The game was ultimately decided by shuffles, with Tonbridge holding their nerve to secure a place in the final and set up a rematch with Simon Langton.

Simon Langton proved too strong in the final, claiming a 3–0 victory. Despite the defeat, Tonbridge’s U14A team secured qualification for the South East Regional Final, where they will represent Kent alongside Simon Langton Grammar School.

Kieron Walsh, Master in Charge of Hockey, praised the players’ efforts across the day. He said the boys were excellent representatives of the school, demonstrating strong sportsmanship, and added that the achievement was particularly impressive given that many of the squad had only started playing hockey earlier this term.
