Mona High School made history by claiming their first Manning Cup title in their 44 year history, defeating Hydel High 1-0 in a tightly contested final. The match, held at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, saw Mona High demonstrating exceptional teamwork and resilience throughout the ninety minutes of play. Despite facing formidable opposition, Mona High became only the 15th team to win the trophy in the 114 years it has been competed for.
Mona High found their breakthrough in the 10th minute when striker Demarion Harris finished past the Hydel keeper, thanks to a cross from Kshaine Gordon and a lovely team move. Mona nearly followed this up with another goal 6 minutes later, when Carlton Brown headed wide past the Hydel post. Hydel were not without their own chances as they pushed for a leveller, with Dontay Stewart and Kialand Smith’s left-footed efforts failing to beat Mona keeper Akeem Bernard.
The full time whistle sparked jubilant and passionate celebrations from the Mona players and their fellow students in the crowd. Mona head coach Craig Butler declared his pride in the team’s effort, “I’m proud of the school and players. We did it together. Mona play systematic football, every player knew what they needed to do and their role from start to finish.”
