McGrath clinch inaugural Ben Francis Cup
In a tense showdown at Independence Park in Kingston, McGrath High School's football team clinched the Issa Wata Ben Francis Cup title with a nail-biting 1-0 victory over Frome Technical High School. Both teams threatened with scoring opportunities in the opening half. However, The deadlock was broken 5 minutes into the second half as McGrath found their breakthrough, when Devone Davis laid the ball off to Anderson, who calmly found the net, beating Oral Davis at his near post.
Frome Technical pushed back in the latter stages of the game, desperately seeking an equaliser with some good chances. However, McGrath's defence just held firm, thwarting Frome’s attempt to level the tie. McGrath defender Isaac Mason cleared the ball off the line in the 74th minute after Jamaro Grant headed goalward a cross from Akeem Congal, with McGrath managing to hold on until the final whistle.
As the final whistle blew, McGrath High School emerged triumphant, etching their name on the trophy, with the first-ever Ben Francis Cup win. McGrath head coach Jermaine Thomas said that he was “happy and elated” at the team’s performance and commended the team and the “entire school community for their support.” Cleighton Stevens, head coach of Frome Technical took the defeat in his stride, stating "First I have to say congratulations to McGrath on their victory, my boys put up a good fight, but it just wasn't our day. It was still a successful season and we just have to build on it going forward.”
