
Despite persistent rain, pupils from 19 primary schools and three high schools showed impressive determination and enthusiasm at the annual Clackmannanshire cross country event, part of the Primary and Secondary Schools Sports Associations’ annual programmes.
Young runners from primary five, six and seven took on a one-mile course around the park, having qualified through in-school cross country races held in August and September.
Even in the wet and slippery conditions, the young athletes displayed great perseverance and sportsmanship.Gold medallists in the primary categories were E Robertson, A Blair, E Glen, O Wallace, L Johnson, L Caskie and H Brown.
In the afternoon, students from S1 to S6 participated in the secondary schools competition, representing Alva Academy, Alloa Academy, Lornshill Academy and Alloa Academy EASN. Around 75 pupils competed over 1.5-mile and 0.5-mile courses.
In the ASN (Additional Support Needs) 0.5-mile race, gold and silver medals went to B Brown, C Bond, J McKenzie, A Shearer, S Sharp and C Gibson. Gold medallists in the 1.5-mile race included F McKinsley, A Judge, E Shirlaw, D McAllister, G Capon, L Roche, K Rafferty, H Miller, R Blair and R Linning.
A huge thanks was given to the Wee County Harriers, Dave Ingram from Central Athletics, and the many young coaches and volunteers who supported the sports and leisure team in hosting the event.
