Archbishop Sentamu Academy in Hull made headlines on Sunday, 15 June, as their Year 10 Girls’ team clinched a historic win in the inspiresport RFL Champion Schools Final at AMT Headingley Stadium. The final was part of a major celebration of Women’s and Girls’ Rugby League, which also featured clashes between Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves in both the U19s and Betfred Women’s Super League. Facing an undefeated The Deanery team from Wigan, ASA showcased their talent and determination in what was a much-anticipated final.
With a strong start, ASA took control early and led at halftime, demonstrating skilful play and solid defence. They maintained their momentum in the second half and secured a 28–16 victory, thanks in large part to M. Warner. Warner’s exceptional performance earned her Player of the Match, as she not only set up several key tries with her clever passing from scrum half but also successfully kicked all her team’s goals. The win marked a proud moment for ASA and underlined their dominance throughout the competition.
The Champion Schools competition, run by the Rugby Football League (RFL), is the largest Rugby League tournament globally, featuring students from Years 7 to 11. Since its inception in 2004, the girls’ division has grown significantly. The RFL’s Andrea Murray praised both teams for their efforts and thanked AMT Headingley Stadium for hosting the event. Looking ahead, the inspiresport Finals Day will continue on 2 July at the DIY Kitchens Stadium. The event also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Youth Sport Trust and National School Sports Week, which promotes daily physical activity and the UK’s biggest ever Sports Day.
